Alpinia zerumbet Variegata – Variegated Shell Ginger
Alpinia zerumbet Variegata, commonly known as Variegated Shell Ginger, is a vibrant, clump-forming tropical perennial celebrated for its striking foliage. The large, lance-shaped leaves are boldly striped with green and creamy yellow, adding bold colour and texture to tropical and subtropical gardens. In warm climates, it also produces clusters of shell-like, fragrant pink and white flowers that hang from arching stems. Reaching 1.52.5 metres in height, Variegata is perfect for feature planting, lush screening, or container displays.
Variegata thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter. It performs best in warm, frost-free climates, but can tolerate light frost with protection. In cooler zones, it grows well in large containers that can be moved indoors during winter.
This fast-growing, rhizomatous perennial forms dense clumps of upright canes, reaching 1.52.5 metres in height and spreading gradually. The vibrant variegated foliage provides year-round interest, while its cascading flowers add seasonal beauty when in bloom.
Plant Alpinia Variegata in rich, well-drained soil in spring or summer. Choose a sheltered location to protect its large leaves from strong winds. Space plants 11.5 metres apart for mass planting or use as a bold accent in tropical beds. Water thoroughly after planting and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Keep soil consistently moist, especially during hot or dry periods. Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring and midsummer to encourage lush foliage and flowering. Prune back older stems to promote new growth and maintain a neat appearance. Mulching annually will help improve soil quality and moisture retention.
Alpinia zerumbet Variegata adds a bold tropical flair to gardens with its vibrant foliage and showy flowers. Perfect for borders, large pots, or as a dramatic screening plant, it offers lush beauty and texture with relatively low maintenance in warm climates.
